Field Hockey Closes Regular Season with 2-1 Win

Box Score

RADNOR, Pa. – For the first time in five years, the Cabrini field hockey closed its regular season on a positive note as the Cavaliers won season-ending match against Alvernia University 2-1 today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.  The Blue and White close the regular season with an overall record of 9-7.

Today's game also marked the final regular season home game for seniors Samantha LaMaina, Erin McLaughlin, Genevieve Paulin and Stephanie Toomey.  The group has led the Cavaliers to 42 career victories, including a 25-4 mark in Colonial States Athletic Conference play.  The ladies have appeared in three consecutive CSAC championship games, capturing the title to end the 2010 campaign.

The ladies have appeared in a combined 244 games, totaling 50 points on 20 goals and 10 assists with nine defensive saves.  Paulin has added 259 career saves to protect Cabrini's net.

The Cavaliers and Crusaders played a very even opening half.  Despite surrendering six first half penalty corners, Cabrini's defense stood strong.  Paulin tallied three saves in the opening half, while LaMaina and sophomore Kerry Anne Farrell added defensive saves.

The game remained scoreless until the final seconds of the opening period when Alvernia took advantage of a penalty corner, scoring the game's first goal with just 11 seconds to play in the opening half.

The Blue and White regrouped during the halftime break.  After falling to Keystone in its last game, the team did not want to drop two consecutive games heading into the CSAC playoffs.  The Cavaliers' more aggressive mind set paid immediate dividends in the second half.

Following a Cabrini penalty corner just 90 seconds into the period, Farrell collected a loose ball, beat a defender and fired the ball into the back of the net for her 16th goal of the season.

The sophomore didn't waste much time giving Cabrini the lead, as she took a pass from freshman Taylor Mack and deposited the ball into the net, handing the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead less than six minutes into the half.

Junior Karlie Gruccio accounted for five of Cabrini's 15 shots on the day, while Farrell added four.  Paulin finished the afternoon with four saves to record her 29th career victory.

Junior Erin Wunsch tallied five saves for Alvernia (11-7).

The Blue and White will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Neumann University in the semifinal round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
