RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini field hockey team fell short in its quest to regain the Colonial States Athletic Conference championship, as the Cavaliers lost to Gwynedd Mercy 4-2 in today's title game at Edith Robb Dixon Field. With the loss, the Blue and White close their season with an overall record of 10-8.
Today also marked the final game at Edith Robb Dixon Field for Cabrini's four seniors,
Erin McLaughlin,
Samantha LaMaina,
Genevieve Paulin and
Stephanie Toomey. The ladies led the Cavaliers to 43 career victories, including a 25-4 mark in CSAC play.
Collectively, the group appeared in 252 games in the Blue and White, recording 52 points on 20 goals and 12 assists with 272 saves. They also led the Cavaliers to four consecutive CAC championship match appearances, claiming victory in 2010.
The Cavaliers fell behind early in today's game, as the Griffins got on the board in the 12th minute when sophomore Stephanie Bacho found fellow sophomore Katie O'Neill. The Griffins doubled their advantage in the 23rd minute when O'Neill found senior Brianne Kline on a penalty corner.
Trailing 2-0 at the half, the Blue and White regrouped, knowing it needed to score early to get back in the game. McLaughlin found sophomore
Kerry Anne Farrell less than three minutes into the second stanza to put Cabrini on the board.
Six minutes later, Farrell evened the score, converting a rebound of a shot by freshman
Kylie McDevitt into her 21st goal of the season. Cabrini continued to press, looking to take its first lead of the game, but it was the Griffins who broke the deadlock.
Bacho and O'Neill, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player, found the net for Gwynedd Mercy in the 48th and 52nd minutes, respectively, to secure the title and the CSAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for Griffins.
In addition to her two goals on the day, Farrell recorded five shots and three defensive saves. Junior
Karlie Gruccio added three shots, while McDevitt tallied two. Paulin recorded four saves on the day.
