Men's Lacrosse Falls Short in Upset Bid

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College men's lacrosse bid to knock off the No. 1 team in the country came down to the final 10 minutes, but in the end the Cavaliers fell to 3-3 on the year with a 10-7 loss to SUNY Cortland.  Junior Corey Elmer led the Blue and White with three goals on the day.

The Cavaliers jumped ahead in the opening seconds of the game, as sophomore Anthony DiNenno found senior Bobby Thorp for the game's opening salvo just nine seconds into play.  The Red Dragons responded one minute later, tying the game at one.  Elmer returned the lead to the Cavaliers with a pair of goals midway
through the opening quarter.  Cortland again responded, evening the score at three after the first quarter.

Just over two minutes into the second quarter, senior Andrew Protenic put the Blue and White ahead when he converted a Mike Leyden pass into his second goal of the season.  The advantage was short-lived as Cortland tied the score just over a minute later.  The score remained tied at 4-4 after 30 minutes of action.

The Red Dragons took its first lead of the game in the third quarter, as they built a 6-4 lead through three periods.  Four minutes into the final period, the Blue and White regained the momentum as Elmer and Thorp found the back of the net in a span of 41 seconds, tying the score at 6-6 with 10:25 to play.

The score remained tied until the 5:48 mark, as Cortland regained its lead with a pair of goals over the next 1:16.  Cabrini got one of the goals back with just under two minutes to play, as sophomore Ethan Heisman scored his fourth goal of the year, cutting the lead to 8-7, but the Red Dragons iced the game with two goals in the final 72 seconds.

Senior defenseman Tim Grenier scooped a game-high three ground balls, while fellow senior Tyler Grau caused two turnovers.  Freshman goaltender Chris Treat recorded 14 saves in his first career start.

Joe Slavik led the Red Dragons (5-0) with foru goals, while Billy Davis added a hat trick.  Mike Kaminski recorded 15 saves between the Cortland pipes.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday, March 24, when they welcome No. 18 Union College (3-1).  Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
