ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team rallied from a 7-5 deficit after three quarters to score a 10-8 win at No. 15 Ithaca College. The road victory, the Blue and White's third over a USILA Top 20 ranked opponent, improves the Cavaliers to 5-3 on the year.
Sophomore Damian Sobieski recorded his second consecutive hat trick, leading the Cavaliers with three goals on the day. Seven other Cavaliers notched the goal column, led by junior Corey Elmer, who also added an assist in the win. Freshman Chris Treat improved to 3-1 between the pipes with 15 saves.
The Bombers opened the scoring midway through the first quarter, as Ithaca converted a man-up opportunity. Three minutes later sophomore Ben Laffoon evened the score with his fourth goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, senior Andrew Layne gave the Blue and White its first lead of the afternoon with an unassisted score, his second of the year. Sobieski doubled the lead with 1:49 left in the opening period.
Ithaca grabbed the momentum early in the second quarter, as the Bombers leveled the score at 3-3 with a pair of goals in the opening five minutes of the second quarter. Sobieski's second goal of the day returned the lead to the Cavaliers with just under nine minutes to play in the half. Ithaca again evened the score midway through the period, as the teams headed into the halftime break tied at four.
Cabrini fell behind 6-4 just south of eight minutes into the second half. Freshman Evan Allvord's first career goal broke a string of three consecutive Ithaca goals, cutting the Blue and White's deficit to 6-5 with 4:31 to play in the third. With a goal with just under 90 seconds left in the period, Ithaca rebuilt its two goal cushion with 15 minutes to play.
The Cavaliers wasted little time grabbing the game's momentum as goals by Sobieski and Elmer evened the score less than three minutes into the final quarter. Ithaca again responded, taking an 8-7 lead with 9:32 to play. Senior Andrew Protenic's third goal of the year came with 6:15 on the clock, tying the game for the fifth time. Less than two minutes later, sophomore Anthony DiSanzo scored his 13th goal of the season and eventual game winner. Senior Bobby Thorp sealed the win with his 16th goal of the season with just 2:39 to play.
Sophomore Anthony DiNenno led the Blue and White with six ground balls, one more than Elmer. Junior Bill McCabe forced a career high three turnovers, all three coming in the decisive fourth quarter.
Sophomore James Manilla led Ithaca (6-2) with three goals and a helper. Junior Jake Long added two goals and an assist. Freshman netminder Scott Sidman recorded 11 saves in the loss.
The Blue and White will return to action on April 3 when it opens Colonial States Athletic Conference play with a trip to Centenary College. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m. in Hackettstown, N.J.
