Men's Lacrosse Wins 6th Straight, Tops Marywood 22-2

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team won its 93rd consecutive regular season Colonial States Athletic Conference game today, topping the visiting Marywood Pacers 22-2 at Edith Robb Dixon Field.  The Cavaliers improved to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference with their sixth straight victory.

Twelve Cavaliers accounted for the 22 goals, including sophomore Mike Leyden who scored a career high five goals on the day.  Junior Corey Elmer posted a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists. Senior Bobby Thorp matched a season high with three goals and three helpers, while sophomore Ethan Heisman three goals.

Thorp opened the scoring with his 23rd goal of the season 92 seconds into the action.  Heisman doubled the lead with 6:29 left in the opening period with his first of the day.   Leyden scored his first two goals at the 5:02 and 2:36 marks, both assisted by Elmer. 

The Cavaliers pulled away late in the period as they erupted for five goals in the final 1:50 of the quarter.  Elmer opened the flurry with an unassisted tally.  Sophomore faceoff specialist Anthony DiNenno won the subsequent faceoff and found Heisman seven second slater for his second of the day.  Sophomore Damian Sobieski found Thorp with 90 seconds left for the senior's second goal of the afternoon.  Heisman and Sobieski added goals in the final 15 seconds, building a 9-0 lead.

Leyden opened the second quarter with his third goal of the day just 37 seconds into the third quarter.  Thorp completed his hat trick with just over six minutes left in the first half.  Leyden added his fourth of the day 14 seconds later in a man-up opportunity.  After two periods, the Cavaliers took a 12-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Blue and white showed no let-up in the third quarter.  Elmer's second goal of the day came with 12:39 left in the third on an assist from Thorp.  With just over seven minutes left in the period, freshman John Doherty scored his second goal of the season.  Sophomore Eric Streicher found Elmer with 5:39 left in the third to complete the junior's hat trick.  DiNenno won the subsequent faceoff and found rookie Evan Allvord seven seconds later for the freshman's second career goal.  Leyden closed his day with his fifth goal with 3:06 left in the period, extending the lead to 17-0 after three periods.

Marywood broke up the shutout with 9:49 left in the game.  Junior Joey Shallow scored 11th goal of the season with 7:52 to play.  Freshman Bruce Overbay tallied his third career goal with 6:42 to play.  With just over 5 minutes to play, sophomore Kevin MacQuilliam scored his sixth goal of 2013.  Freshman Matt Figueroa scored his first career goal with 3:23 to play.  Fellow rookie Jake Donohoe closed the scoring with his third career goal with 1:40.

DiNenno and junior Bill McCabe added two assists each.  Leyden and Elmer led Cabrini with six ground balls each, while senior Tim Grenier added four.  Senior Tyler Grau forced three Marywood turnovers.  Freshman goaltender Chris Treat recorded five saves and improved to 7-1 on the year.

The Cavaliers dominated the stat sheet, including outshooting the Pacers 60-14.  The Blue and White won 22-28 faceoffs, including 19-23 by DiNenno, and scooped 40 ground balls to Marywood's 18.

Senior Greg nester and sophomore Sam Trill recorded the goals for Marywood (3-9, 2-2 CSAC).  Senior goaltender Nicholas Cornella posted 16 saves in the loss.

The Cavaliers will visit Neumann University on Thursday, April 18.  The CSAC game is slated for 4:00 p.m.
