MADISON, N.J. – The Cabrini field hockey team jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold the advantage, dropping its 2013 season opener to Swarthmore College 4-3 in overtime at the Drew University Fall Festival.  

Sophomore Jen Webb led the Blue and White with the first two careers of her collegiate career, while fellow sophomore Kerry Anne Farrell paired a goal and an assist.  Senior netminder Genevieve Paulin recorded 11 saves on the day.  

The Cavaliers wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard, as Webb deflected a Farrell cross into the back of the net just 34 seconds into the season.  The advantage was short lived as Swarthmore leveled the score 66 seconds later.

The score remained 1-1until the ninth minute when Webb scored her second goal off a Swarthmore defensive deflection.  Farrell doubled the lead in the 18th minute when she converted the rebound off a Web shot, giving the Blue and White a 3-1 cushion.  Swarthmore cut into the lead with a goal in the 20th minute.  

Cabrini carried a 3-2 advantage into the halftime break after a first half during which the club outshot Swarthmore 16-10.

Swarthmore leveled the score at 3-3 less than four minutes into the second stanza.  The Cavaliers continued to exert offensive pressure, firing 15 second half shots and forcing 12 penalty corners after the break.  The Garnet defense was up to the challenge, as reserve goaltender Ainsley Parrish posted 11 second half saves.

The game went to overtime tied at three.  Both teams had opportunities, but the Garnet made their last chance count, netting the game winner just over eight minutes into the extra period.

Cabrini outshot Swarthmore 33-24 on the afternoon, including a game-high 12 shots by junior Karlie Gruccio.  

Cabrini will return to action on Saturday when they face Lebanon Valley College on the second day of the Drew Fall Festival. Game time is slated for 10:00 a.m.
