CHESTER, Pa. - After four consecutive defeats, the Cabrini field hockey team finally left the field with a good feeling after topping Widener University 3-1 this evening in Chester, Pa. the victory snapped the Blue and White's four game losing streak and improved the Cavaliers to 2-5 on the season.
The game remained scoreless until the 24th minute when Widener's Meghan Garvey gave the Pride a 1-0 lead it would take into the halftime break. Cabrini maintained a 10-4 advantage in first half shots, but the Pride stood firm, recording seven first half saves.
The Cavaliers leveled the score in the 45th minute when senior Erin McLaughlin gather a pass that bounced off Widener's goaltender and put it in the net for her third goal of the season. The Blue and White showed no let down, taking thelead less than three minutes later.
After a penalty corner in the 47th minute, sophomore Kerry Anne Farrell found junior Karlie Gruccio for her first tally of the season, giving Cabrini a 2-1 lead.
Cabrini put the game away in the 53rd minute as McLaughlin carried the ball down the field and found freshman Taylor Mack cutting to the goal. The rookie converted the pass into her first career collegiate goal.
Farrell led the Cavaliers with five of its 14 shots on the game, and joined McLaughlin and Gruccio with three shots on goal. Senior goaltender Genevieve Paulin recorded three saves in the win, while juniors Taylor Carroll and Danielle Palatano added defensive saves.
Widener (3-4) goaltender Mikayla Ninos recorded five saves in the loss.
The Blue and White will return to action on Wednesday, when it visits Hoboken, N.J. to face Stevens Institute of Technology (3-2). Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
