Men's Lacrosse Celebrates Senior Night with Visit from Gwynedd Mercy

Today's action marks the final regular season home game for Cabrini's seven seniors, Evan Downey, Steve Halko, Ryan Hannan, Ben Junior, Colin McGavin, Patrick Regan and Nick Vass, a group that has gone 34-4 at Edith Robb Dixon Field

Last Meeting: Cabrini claimed 16th consecutive CSAC title with 21-6 victory (5/7/16, Radnor, PA)
After scoring a 19-3 road win during the regular season, the Cavaliers rolled to a 21-6 victory in the CSAC championship game. A trio of Cabrini sophomores made the most of their first championship game appearance, combining for 20 points on 13 goals and seven assists.

Sophomore Matt LoParo led the way, earning Most Valuable Player honors with a career high 10 points and career best eight goals, including three in the game's opening 10 minutes.  Classmates Timmy Brooks and Jordan Krug added five points each.

Cabrini forced 12 of GMercyU's 23 turnovers on the day, with sophomore Kevin Delaney causing a career high three. Krug and senior Evan Downey also scooped three ground balls each.

Six Griffins scored in the loss, with junior Dominic Moscariello pairing a goal and an assist.  Senior goaltender Sean Myers suffered the loss after making eight first half saves, scooping four ground balls and causing two turnovers.  Freshman Chris Burns took over the crease in the second half, notching nine stops.

Junior Zack Gregory scored in the game's first minute, as the Blue and White was off and running. Cabrini built a comfortable 9-1 lead after the first quarter and led 14-3 at the half.

Fifteen Cavaliers found the back of the net in the win, with Krug leading the way with four goals.  Junior Ethan Trusty and freshman Thomas Bryant recorded their first career hat tricks, while freshman Tyler Kostack posted five points to lead a quartet of Cavaliers with two goal each.

Sophomore Trey Critides saw significant action at the faceoff spot, where he went 20-22, scooped 11 ground balls and recorded his first career goal. Junior Riley Michaels also claimed victory in 11 of his 13 chances at the X, scooping five ground balls.  

Freshman goaltender Matt Nestler recorded three first half saves to earn the victory, while sophomore Riley White recorded one save in 30 minute of relief action.

Gwynedd Mercy Last Time Out: 11-10 OT loss at Rosemont snapped Griffins' four game win streak (4/22/17, Rosemont, PA)
After holding an 8-4 lead with 9:53 left in the third quarter, the Griffins saw Rosemont score five of the next six goals to even the score at 9-9 with 6:38 to play.  

GMercyU regained a slim lead on sophomore Ryan Simpson's man-up tally with just under three minutes to play.  The Ravens responded with an unassisted goal with 101 seconds on the clock, before scoring the game-winner 2:29 into the overtime.

Junior Kristoffer Boyd scored a three goals and a career high four points, while Simpson and freshman Kohler Setley combined for three goals and three assists. Sophomore Jordan Dzierzgowski matched Setley with two goals.

Senior Marc Bushong led the defense with four caused turnovers and four ground balls, while senior Matt Collins secured six ground balls.  Junior Joe Simpson went 4-17 at the faceoff spot, while Myers posted 13 saves in the loss.

  • Cabrini ranks in the nation's top 25 in 12 NCAA statistical categories, including top 10 points per game (#14-25.13), scoring margin (#7-8.33) and man-up offense (#3-.510).
  • The Cavaliers rank 10th in the country in scoring offense (16.07) but do not have a single player in the top 80 in the country in points, assists or goals per game.
  • Cabrini has surrendered just eight man-down goals in 46 penalties.
  • The Cavaliers have won nearly 81% of their faceoffs in CSAC play, with Critides, junior Riley Michaels and freshman Bobby Cressman each ranking among the top 5 in CSAC faceoff percentage.
  • Six Cavaliers have recorded north of 30 points on the season. Krug (41 goals, 54 points) and freshman Jake Klein (21 assists) list among the group.

  • Simpson's 29 points, 19 goals and 10 assists lead a balanced offensive attack that features six players with at least 13 goals and 20 points each.
  • The Griffins rang among the nation's top defenses, as its 6.33 goals against average is sixth in Division III, while its man-down percentage of .833 ranks 12th.
  • GMercyU has recorded more than 12 goals just twice in its 12 outings, but averaged 13.5 goals per game in CSAC play, second in the conference.
  • Bushong in the anchor to the defensive effort, as the senior ranks ninth in the country with 2.92 caused turnovers per game.
  • After going 4-0 in CSAC road games last season, the Griffins are still looking for their first this season after losses at Centenary (7-6 2OT) and Rosemont (11-10 OT).
