What's At Stake?
Sunday's winner will advance to the NCAA championship game, slated for Sunday, May 26 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA.
This marks unchartered territory for the Cavaliers, who are making the program's first ever appearance in the semifinal round. Cabrini is also looking for its first postseason victory over the Sea Gulls after dropping each of its five previous tournament meetings.
Arguably the country's most decorated program, the Sea Gulls are no stranger to the tournament's final four, as Sunday will mark the program's 23rd appearance in the last 31 seasons.
The other side of the tournament bracket features a pair of New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESAC) teams, as No. 5 Williams (18-3) will host No. 7 Amherst (17-3) at 1pm.
Williams won both of the teams' previous meetings, including an 11-8 win in the NESCAC tournament semifinal on May 4.
How Cabrini Got Here
The Blue and White was the only team in the 36 team tournament to earn a Pool B berth, selected from a group of true independents and schools from conferences that do not have an automatic bid for their champions.
Cabrini ranks as one of the nation's top two-way teams, as the club boasts the nation's third ranked scoring defense (6.32 goals per game) and the ninth ranked scoring offense (16.95 goals per game). The Cavaliers also rank in the nation's top 20 in 14 other statistical categories, including scoring margin, assists, points and turnovers.
Winners of 13 consecutive games, the Blue and White sport a balanced offensive attack that includes six players with at least 40 points. Atlantic East Conference Player of the Year senior
Jordan Krug, who recently became the program's all-time leading scorer, joined the century club in Wednesday's victory. Krug joins Cory Elmer as the only players in program history to record 100 points in a season.
Sophomore
Kyle Tucker and senior
Bill Morgan have tallied 45 and 40 goals, respectively. Junior
Jakob Klein leads the club with 43 helpers to go with 31 goals for 74 points, while Krug has dished out 34 helpers.
Senior goaltender
Riley White mans the Cabrini pipes and ranks as one of the nation's best. The senior ranks second in the nation with a 6.27 goals against average and sports the country's 25th best save percentage of .585 with 162 saves on the year.
Atlantic East Conference Defensive Player of the Year
Tommy DeLuca anchors a stingy Blue and White defense that averages 12.59 caused turnovers per contest, 19th in the country. The junior ranks 23rd in the country with 2.64 forced miscues per game, while seniors
Nick Vass and
Sean Wagner and junior
Kyle Myers have forced at least 20 each.
The Cavaliers often spark their offensive attack at the faceoff spot, where they boast a .589 win percentage. Sophomore
Luke McCallion has won more than .588 of his chances, while freshman
Jake Huey has claimed 92 of his 136 opportunities.
How Salisbury Got Here
The Sea Gulls are making their 31st consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance after topping York 13-7 for a 22nd Capital Athletic Conference championship.
One of four teams to host an opening round game, Salisbury has cruised through its first three tournament games. The Sea Gulls topped Maritime 19-4 in the second round, before ending No. 19 Lynchburg's season with an 18-10 third round victory. They moved into the semifinal with a 19-10 win over No. 9 Denison in Wednesday's quarterfinal.
Senior Brett Malamphy sparks the Salisbury with a dominance at the faceoff spot. The CAC Player of the Year ranks sixth in the country with a .735 win percentage and 221 ground balls on the season.
The Sea Gulls build off Malamphy's success with a high powered offensive attack that averages north of 17 goals and 52.4 shots per contest. The team boasts six players with north of 60 points on the season, led by junior Josh Melton's 116 points. The junior joins sophomore Cross Ferrara (66 goals) and senior Corey Gwin (62 goals) atop the team's goal table, while leading the club with 50 helpers.
Junior goaltender Brandon Warren mans the Sea Gulls' crease and sports a 7.34 goals against average, seventh best in Division III, and .561 save percentage with 156 stops on the year.
Warren is protected by a deep group of defensive players, including eight players who have caused at least 10 turnovers on the season. Juniors Kevin Murphy and Drew Borkowicz and sophomore Brad Apgar have started all 23 contests and secured at least 45 ground balls and caused 24 turnovers.
Last Meeting: No. 1 Salisbury 13, No. 6 Cabrini 5 (3/7/2019, Radnor, PA)
The Cavaliers suffered its second consecutive loss at the hands of the Sea Gulls, who used a run of five unanswered second half goals to pull away.
Cabrini scored the game's first two goals, but Salisbury responded with four consecutive goals. The Cavaliers trailed 5-3 at the half and 6-4 after Krug's goal with 6:25 left in the third. The Sea Gulls, then, seized control of the game with five straight goals. Pierre Armstrong's man-up goal with 9:55 to play gave the visitors a commanding 11-4 advantage.
Krug finished the night with three goals, while junior
Tyler Kostack matched his three points, pairing a goal and two helpers.
White paired five saves and five ground balls, while McCallion went 11-20 at the X and scooped three ground balls. Vass and Myers joined junior
Robert Cressman with two ground balls each.
Melton led Salisbury with four goals and two assists, while senior Zach Pompea paired a goal and four helpers. Warren earned the victory after posting 11 saves, while Murphy paired three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Cabrini Last Time Out: No. 6 Cabrini 11, #4 York 10 OT (5/15/2019, York, PA)
Despite trailing 5-1 at the half and 7-4 entering the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers rallied to force overtime before junior
Mike Gerzabek's diving game-winning goal completed the comeback.
The Blue and white began its comeback early in the fourth, as Krug and Tucker combined for three unanswered goals to even the score at 7-7 with 7:21 to play. The teams alternated goals over the final minutes of the stanza, with Tucker sending the game into overtime with his third marker of the day with 51 seconds to play.
York won the initial faceoff in overtime, but a defensive stand gave Cabrini its chance at a game-winner. Following a Blue and White time out, Gerzabek took a chance and racing to the crease, where his diving shot attempt beat York goaltender Jack Michael, sending the Cavaliers streaming onto the field in celebration.
After struggling through the opening 30 minutes, the Cavaliers controlled the final 32, outshooting the Spartans 31-12. Cabrini committed just five turnovers after the halftime break and just one in the fourth quarter and overtime, while it completed 10 of its 11 clear attempts.
Krug and Tucker scored three goals each for the Blue and White, while Gerzabek finished with two goals, including the game-winner. Klein added three points and matched Kostack with two helpers.
White recorded a season-high 15 saves, including 10 in the first half. DeLuca paired two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while White, Myers and McCallion scooped three ground balls each. McCallion also went 10-25 at the faceoff spot.
Salisbury Last Time Out: No. 2 Salisbury 19, No. 9 Denison 10 (5/152019, Salisbury, MD)
After surrendering the game's first two goals, Salisbury tallied five of the next six to build a slim 5-4 lead after the first quarter. The Sea Gulls blew the game open in the second, outscoring the visitors 7-1 to take a commanding 12-5 lead at the half.
Salisbury stymied any hope of a Big Red comeback, as Denison attempted just nine shot in the second half and 22 on the day. The Sea Gulls also outshot Denison 55-22, won 24 of the game's 32 faceoffs and more than doubled the Big Red's 22 ground balls.
Ferrara matched a career high with six points and five goals for Salisbury, while Melton and Gwin added four points each, combing for seven goals.
Malamphy dominated the X, going 19-23 with 11 ground balls, while junior Riley Ford secured five and classmate Brad Greik four. Murphy caused three turnovers, one more than Ford and Borkowicz, with Warren posting six saves in the Seagulls' pipes.
