What's at Stake?
The winner of Saturday's title tile will claim the first ever Atlantic East Conference Men's Lacrosse championship. The title will mark either the 19th consecutive crown for the Cavaliers or the first for the Griffins.
Neither of these clubs is a stranger to championship Saturday, as this will mark their fifth meeting in the championship game and the third in the last four years.
In the 2018 Colonial States Athletic Conference championship, the Cavaliers scored the first four goals before a 5-1 third quarter spurt pushed Cabrini's lead to an insurmountable 14-6.
Senior
Nicholas Waligurski scored three goals to earn MVP honors, while classmate
Timmy Brooks added four goals. Fellow senior
Jordan Krug added seven points, two more than junior
Tyler Kostack.
Senior Ryan Simpson scored twice for Gwynedd Mercy, while classmate Jordan Dzierzgowski added a goal and two assists.
Last Meeting: #7 Cabrini 20, Gwynedd Mercy 2 (3/30/2019, Gwynedd Valley, PA)
The Cavaliers opened Atlantic East Conference play with a statement, scoring 20 goals in just 38 shots, while stifling the Griffins' attack. Cabrini scored the first five goals of the afternoon, then after GMercyU's first goal, kept the home team scoreless for north of 30 minutes.
Krug led eight Cabrini goal scorers, as the senior posted eight points on five goals and three assists and a pair of caused turnovers. Classmate
Bill Morgan matched a career high with four goals, while junior
Mike Gerzabek and sophomore
Griffin Shira added three goals each.
Sophomore
Luke McCallion was solid at the faceoff spot, winning eight of his 11 chances and scooping seven ground balls. Senior
Sean Wagner added three caused turnovers to his first goal of the season.
Senior Jordan Dzierzgowski and junior Derek Alcavage scored for Gwynedd Mercy while freshman goaltender Aubron Swartley recorded eight saves.
Cabrini Last Time Out: #6 Cabrini 25, Neumann 4 (5/1/2019, Radnor, PA)
The Cavaliers secured their spot in Saturday's championship game with a dominating performance in the tournament semifinal round. After surrendering the game's first goal, the Blue and White rattled off 14 unanswered goals, holding the Knights scoreless for nearly 30 minutes.
Thirteen Cavaliers marked the scoring column, as the Blue and White paired 60 shots and just nine turnovers. Krug led the way with a game-high eight points on five goals and three assists. Shira and classmate
Kyle Tucker added three goals and two assists each, while a quartet of Cavaliers added two goals each.
The Cavaliers also controlled the faceoff spot, claiming 17 of the 32 draws against the team with the nation's top faceoff win percentage. Sophomore
Luke McCallion went 10-18, while freshman
Jake Huey went 7-8.
Cabrini's defense held the Knights to just 14 shots and 12-25 in clear attempts and pressured the visitors into 32 turnovers. Junior
Tommy DeLuca caused a game-high four turnovers and led a unit that saw 11 Cavaliers combine for 17 caused turnovers.
Gwynedd Mercy Last Time Out: Gwynedd Mercy 10, Marymount 8 (5/1/2019, Gwynedd Valley, PA)
After building a 3-1 first quarter lead, the Saints battled back to even the score at 5-5 late in the third quarter. Freshman Jacob Dzierzgowski, junior Lucas Gray and Simpson combined to score three unanswered goals to put the home team ahead 8-5 with 11:27 to play.
The Saints got one of the goals back before Jordan and Jacob Dzierzgowski scored goals in a one minute span to push the lead to 10-6 with just over four minutes to play.
The Dzierzgowski brothers scored three goals each, while Jacob added three assists. Sophomore Nick Heiler went 11-17 at the X and secured seven ground balls, two more than junior Zach Groses. Swartley earned the victory after recording eight saves.
