Men's lacrosse sweeps Atlantic East Conference major awards

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Cabrini University men's lacrosse program swept the 2023 Atlantic East Conference major awards the league office announced Tuesday. 
 
Senior attack Dillon McManus was named Player of the Year and graduate student Matt Hughes was named Defensive Player of the Year while freshman Sam DiTrolio earned Rookie of the Year. Sophomore Jason Fridge was named the Atlantic East Elite 20 award winner while head coach Steve Colfer and his staff were named Coaching Staff of the Year. 
 
McManus, a Dix Hills, N.Y. native had a stellar season for the Blue and White. The senior led the conference in goals per game with 3.17 as he tallied 57 on the year. McManus recorded three or more goals in 11 out of Cabrini's 18 games on the season. He totaled 79 points and averaged 4.39 points per game, good for fourth in the conference. 
 
Hughes, a Wyomissing, Pa. native, repeated as the conference's Defensive Player of the Year in 2023. He led the strongest defensive coalition in the league as the Cavaliers allowed just 7.94 goals per game, the fewest of any team. He led the Cavs in caused turnovers with 16 and averaged .89 caused turnovers per game, good for 10th best in the league. 
 
Sam DiTrolio, a Glen Mills, Pa. native, shined in his rookie campaign as the FOGO's .735 winning percentage at the X leads all of NCAA Division III. 

The Elite 20 Award is awarded to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing in the finals of the conference's 20-team championships. Fridge, a native of Lynnwood, Wash., was named this year's winner as the sophomore has maintained a cumulative 4.0 GPA.
 
Four other Cavaliers were named to the All-Conference First Team as freshman Connor Herraiz joined McManus on first-team attack and Jake Schneider was named a first team midfielder. Zack Kaut and Peter Hewitt were named first team long-stick and short-stick midfielders, respectively while DiTrolio was conference's best faceoff specialist. 
 
Freshman Matt Vanaman and junior Tommy Vaughan were both named second team attack while freshmen Bear Evans and Connor Watts were named second team defense and goalie, respectively. 
 
All-in-all, the Cavaliers had 11 players named to All-Conference team this season.
