Scouting the Bears
The Bears are off to a slow start in 2018 as they have yet to pick up their first victory of the season and own an 0-7 overall record. Their first three games in particular proved difficult as they managed just a combined seven runs, while conceding a staggering 51 runs, as they lost to New York University 17-2, and back-to-back games to Mary Washington University, 19-5 and 15-0.
While the pitching has greatly improved over the Bears' last four games (4.5 runs allowed), the offense has continued to sputter. As a team, the Bears are batting just .206 with a .294 OBP and a .242 SLG%.Â
Of the qualified batters, Adam Schwartz leads the team with a .318 average and a .375 OBP. The junior infielder has tallied three runs and has struck out just three times in 22 at bats.Â
Daniel Egan has emerged as the staff ace as the righty has logged eight innings and worked to a 3.38 ERA, while striking out six.Â
Last Meeting: Cavaliers christen new season with sweep of PSU Brandywine (2/19/17)
The Cavaliers rode their offense to a 10-9 victory in the program's inaugural game over the Lions as they used a six run fifth inning to power past Brandywine. Senior
Dylan Butler clubbed two long balls in game one and followed it up with his third home run of the day in game two, a 5-3 victory for the sweep.Â
Senior
Josh Breittholz (2.1 IP, 2 ER, 2K) and sophomore
Jake Dohar (4.0 IP, 0 ER, 4K) earned the victories on the mound in games one and two, respectively. Junior
Tyler Norris picked up four hits on the day. Â
Cabrini Last Time Out: Cavs split against Wells College (3/11/18)
In game one, FreshmanÂ
Corey Hunt pitched a superb five innings for the Blue and White as the rookie faced just three over the minimum and allowed three hits, while striking out five and not surrendering a walk for his second win of the season.Â
ClassmateÂ
JD Barrett led the way offensively for the Diamond Cavs as he finished 3-5 with two runs and two RBI's. SeniorÂ
Brett Kuchera (1-5, 2B), sophomoreÂ
Vince Gares (1-4) and freshmanÂ
Justin Henry (1-5) each tallied two RBI's, while sophomoreÂ
Alex Del Giudice tallied three hits, two runs and an RBI.Â
Game two's action featured strong pitching performances from both teams as freshmanÂ
Griffin Hays earned the start for Cabrini and battled through five innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out two.Â
Hays was matched pitch for pitch by Express starter Jared Strait who tossed five shutdown innings, as he allowed just four hits and struck out six. Strait featured a strong curveball that kept the Cabrini offense off balance throughout his five innings of work.Â
Seven different Cavs recorded one hit each, led by freshmanÂ
Brett Swire who picked up a two RBI single in the sixth.Â
St. Joseph's Last Time Out: Bears fall to Mary Washington 5-0 (3/11/18)
The Bears had men on first and second with one out in the top of the first, but a double-play got the hosts out of the jam. SJC threatened once again in the second loading the bases with one down, but a batter's interference and fly-out squashed the momentum.
Mary Washington tripled to lead off the bottom of the fourth and was then driven in on a single as the Eagles held a 1-0 lead after four full. SJC came close all game having runners at first and third with two outs in the top of the fifth, but the UMW came up with a strikeout to keep the Bears scoreless as the Bears failed to threaten the rest of the game.Â
PSU Brandywine Last Time Out: Lions top Emerson 6-5 (3/8/18)
The Lions overcame a three-run deficit to win game two, rallying from down 5-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning.
Brian Reynolds and Brett Sheeran tallied back-to-back singles to start the fifth inning and both came around to score on Anthony Polanco's two-run base hit.Â
One inning later, the Lions knotted the score at 5-5 as Matt Masi doubled to lead off the frame and crossed home on Reynolds' single to center field, sending the game to extra innings. After Brandywine loaded the bases with one out for Polanco in extra's, the New York native delivered a base hit through the right side, scoring Masi with the winning run.
