Freshman women’s lacrosse student-athlete Nathalie Basunga has been named CabriniAthletics.com Student-Athlete of the Week, for the week ending Sunday, April 28. The rookie accounted for 31 draw controls in two games last week.
Despite dropping its final two regular season games, Basunga’s play stood out. In Cabrini’s 19-18 loss at Widener, the freshman scored a career high eight points on five goals and three assists. The five goals marked a career best as did her 17 draw controls. Two of Basunga’s goals came in the final four minutes of play, as she tied the score at 16 and gave the Blue and White its final lead at 18-17.
In the Cavaliers’ regular season finale, Basunga scored two of Cabrini’s five goals in a 19-5 loss at No. 9 The College of New Jersey. The rookie also won 14 of the game’s 26 draw controls, winning seven more than the entire TCNJ team.
Basnga, who was recently named the Colonial States Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year leads the Blue and White with 61 points and 26 assists, while her 35 goals rank third. Her 91 draw controls rank among the league’s best, while her 34 ground ball and 17 caused turnovers are among Cabrini’s team leaders.
Basunga and the Cavaliers will open defense of their 2012 CSAC championship on Wednesday when they welcome Immaculata University to Edith Robb Dixon Field. The conference semifinal game is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
